Meet the Design, Digital and Commissioning team
Meet the people who make up our Design, Digital and Commissioning team and learn about what they do day to day and what they enjoy about working at YTL Construction UK.
Our team
Our established and high-performing internal design team delivers the designs for both wastewater and water supply upgrades, supporting construction project delivery and responding to growing demand for strategic design across business planning, feasibility, and integrated design and build.
Our multi-discipline team delivers comprehensive design services across the entire project lifecycle - from feasibility studies through to outline and detailed design, culminating in construction-ready outputs.
Our expertise spans hydraulic modelling, process engineering, and digital engineering using platforms such as Revit and Civil 3D. We integrate civil, mechanical, electrical, and process disciplines to ensure cost-effective, buildable, and safe design outcomes, while also providing services in commissioning, temporary works design, risk management, and hazard identification to support robust and compliant delivery.
Dan Richman, Senior Engineering Geologist
My role is extremely varied. It’s a 50/50 split between being in the office and out on site. In the office, I conduct geological desk studies, design geotechnical ground investigations, interpret lab and field data, evaluate geotechnical risk and offer advice on ground conditions.
On site, I supervise ground investigations and complex operations, such as piling, earthworks and horizontal directional drilling. I also visit sites prior to construction to complete walkovers that make up part of geological desk studies.
The thing I enjoy most about the role is the variation and getting to work with some very cool heavy plant equipment like drilling and piling rigs, cranes and excavators.
We’re all like-minded individuals in my team with various engineering backgrounds. This diversity allows us to tackle complex challenges collaboratively.
Dan Wilcox, Commissioning Technician
We provide process advice for projects in the design stage. During construction, we set up, test and optimise the newly installed processes. For handover, we sign off on all the required reliability and performance documents and certificates.
No two days are the same, and every project has different challenges. We arrive at a site which needs improving, and we leave having given it a new lease of life.
Before I joined the business, I’d only worked for small companies that didn’t invest in me. Since working here, I’ve been provided with lots of training and qualifications, which have allowed me to progress in my career.
Elly van der Linde, Process Engineer
I work on the plant design for water recycling centres. Core elements of the role involve modelling the plan to understand how the site is currently performing, then developing new process designs to meet incoming regulations, replace assets and add resilience.
I most enjoy the problem-solving element of my role, and the people I get to work with are fantastic and have a lot of knowledge and experience in their fields. The learning opportunities are very much there, and I have a brilliant mentor who is helping me progress. It’s a really friendly and supportive team, so it’s fun too.
Everyone says it, and it’s true, the people here make this a great place to work – everyone is genuinely supportive. The company benefits are also good, and it’s reassuring that YTL is committed to the long-term success of its UK businesses.
Eunie Lee, Group Design UK Integration Manager
I co-led the feasibility programme for the next five-year period, ensuring that all deliverables were technically sound and supported by cost-effective proposals. More recently, I took on the responsibility of integrating one of our design and build contractors based in Malaysia into YTL Construction. I’ve particularly enjoyed applying my technical expertise while collaborating with diverse teams and seeing the tangible impact of effective cross-team working.
Everyone is deeply passionate about their area of expertise and always willing to share their knowledge. This collaborative spirit ensures that the technical solutions we propose are in the best interest of the client. I’ve really enjoyed working in such a supportive and friendly environment, where knowledge-sharing is the norm, and colleagues are not only professional but also a pleasure to be around.
I believe YTL Construction is a fantastic place to work, offering a wide range of exciting opportunities. When I was a young engineer, the company was incredibly supportive of my journey toward chartership. Later, when I became a mother, they were equally open and accommodating, enabling flexible working arrangements that helped me maintain a healthy work-life balance.
What we do
Laying the foundations at Avonmouth
A new sewage pumping station is being built at Avonmouth water recycling centre. A detailed assessment was carried out by our Structural and Geotechnical Engineers before the pile foundations were installed to ensure damage to existing structures from vibrations was prevented.
We designed, supervised and interpreted the series of trial investigations to determine the best option. A variety of methods were explored, including driven pre-cast concrete piles, driven steel tubes, augering (a type of drilling device), and sheet piles installed using hammers and silent press techniques.
Thanks to these trials, the sheet piles were installed using a vibration-free method called ‘silent piling’ and pre-augering methods were used to install pre-cast concrete piles with zero damage to any nearby existing structures.
"We collaborated with our project management and civils teams to provide a methodology enabling both the cofferdam (water-tight enclosure) and founding piles to be installed, minimising risk to critical infrastructure to as low as reasonably practicable."
Principal Geotechnical Engineer Chris Grew
